How Bail Works After An Arrest in Grass Valley
The process is straightforward once you know what to expect.
Booking
After arrest, your loved one is transported to the Nevada County Jail in Nevada City. Fingerprints, photograph, and paperwork. This usually takes one to a few hours.
Bail Set
For most misdemeanor charges, bail is set automatically from the Nevada County Bail Schedule shortly after booking. For felony charges, bail may be set by a judge at arraignment at the Nevada County Superior Court.
Bond Posted
Once bail is set, we can begin the bond process. California law sets the bail bond premium at 10% of the total bail. We handle the paperwork by phone, so you don't need to come to our office unless you'd prefer to or you are paying in cash.
Release
Once the bond is submitted to the jail, release processing typically takes 20 minutes to a few hours depending on how busy the jail is. We will call you when your loved one is ready for release.

Does Bail House know Grass Valley specifically?
Yes. Fifty-plus years in Nevada County means we know the Grass Valley courthouse system, the Nevada County Jail intake process, and the practical realities of getting someone home to the Grass Valley area. We've helped families from every neighborhood — from downtown around Mill Street to the newer developments on the edges of town.
Why Grass Valley Residents Trust Bail House
Grass Valley is one of those places where you notice when the Del Oro's marquee changes, when a new shop opens on Mill Street, and when your neighbor's yard needs mowing. It's a Gold Country town where families stay for generations, retirees settle in for the peaceful pace, and everyone seems to know everyone through World Fest, the summer street fairs, and the holiday events downtown.
That community-mindedness is why families here don't want a stranger from a 1-800 number handling something as personal as a family member's arrest. They want someone local. Someone who understands that in a small town, discretion matters. Someone who's been doing this long enough that nothing about the local system is a surprise.
That's who we are. We are the oldest and most experienced bail bonds agency in Nevada County — Bail House Bail Bonds, formerly known as Frank Calabretta's Bail House, serving this community for over 50 years. Our roots run through the same soil as the Cornish miners, the historic downtown, and the mountain families who've been here for generations.
We understand the local system inside and out. We work regularly with:
-
Grass Valley Police Department arrests
-
Nevada County Sheriff's Office arrests in the Grass Valley area
-
California Highway Patrol stops along Highway 49 and Highway 174
-
Bookings and releases through the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility
-
Nevada County Superior Court proceedings
We've seen just about every scenario Grass Valley can throw at a family, so nothing is going to surprise us. Compassion isn't a marketing line — it's a community standard here.
Need to A Bail Bond in Grass Valley Right Now?
Why Working with a Local Agency Matters
Knowing where your loved one is being held — and how that facility handles bail processing — significantly speeds up release. Because we're just a few minutes north on Highway 49, we can move paperwork to Wayne Brown Correctional Facility faster than an out-of-area agency can. When time matters, that matters.
Because we work in the Nevada County system every day, we know:
- How bail amounts are typically set for common Grass Valley charges
- When release processing tends to move quickly — and when delays are common
- What paperwork is required to avoid rejected bonds
- How to coordinate with local detention staff efficiently

Most importantly, we treat every situation with discretion and urgency. Grass Valley is a small town. People talk. We understand that, and we handle every family's situation with the privacy it deserves.
Our owner, Melissa Zimmerman, grew up nearby and has worked in the bail industry since she was 18. That's decades of service in the Grass Valley and Nevada City communities. That long-standing relationship with the local system — and with the people who live in it — gives us insight that only comes from years of real, on-the-ground experience.
Our mission is to reunite people with their families so they can address legal matters with the comfort and support of home, rather than from incarceration.
